IN MEMORIAM

"Learning is one of the things that makes life worthwhile. To be able to teach goes beyond this ... it gives me a feeling of fulfillment ... I can't say whether I like to teach young children better than teenagers . . . working with each group has its satisfying moments and its rewards ... a teenager however, is getting ready to step out into the world, and if I can make that step any easier, I want to do so . . . one thing I'm sure of, learning never really stops . . . the more I live, the more I teach, the more I learn . . . and that's what it's all about."

Remembrances from conversations and letters.

SPORTS

FOOTBALL

Despite not reaching the 500 mark, the Dayton Bulldogs had one of their most successful seasons in recent years. The team showed a balanced offense and defense with seniors turning in a fine performance in both instances. On defense, Co-Captain Dennis Marino, Randy Huntoon and Art Weisbrot came up with the big plays when it counted. Our offense had seniors Jay Silverman, John Hagemeyer, Gary Grant, Danny Silverman, and Bob Kurtzer combining with some fine underclassmen to produce some exciting action. Co-Captain. Bob Janukowicz, Carmine Bove and Scott Prussing also turn in outstanding seasons on offense and playing in the defensive as well.

The highlights of the season came when we tied Clark 0-0. In this game the defensive team turned in their finest performance of the season, by re- peatedly stopping a powerful Clark team inside our own 50 yard line. The following week the team again played well with a solid victory over Hillside. The game was sparked by a 53 yard punt return by Joe Rapuano.

Coach Amo feels the team will show continued improvement next year with many fine underclassmen returning. Coach Amo is resting his hope on players such as Joe Rapuano, Don Astley, Ed Cook, Joe D'Agostini, Rich Lan, Tom Rossiter, Ken Di Carlo, Gil Gleim, Mike Stadler. Rich Wnek. Andy Nitkin, Bill Sivolella, Bob Nardone and Wayne Winnick.

Asst. Coach Kindler, Head Coach Amo, Asst. Coaches Jones and Marionni.

The 1970 Dayton soccer team, despite a disappoint- ing final record, played impressively against some extremely strong teams. Lead by Pete May, Dave Dubin and John Sarracino on offense and Nate Kauf- man, Ray Danziger, Dave Miniman, Al Schlanger and Justin Schneider on defense, the Bulldogs were never far from victory in any game. The team also received strong support from seniors Craig Nowinski and Brad Diefenbacher, and juniors Bill Stefany and F. Frieri.

According to Coach Esposito, the high point in Dayton's tough schedule was his team's 2-1 triumph over a powerful Verona squad.

Mr. Sophistication?

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country team this year again compiled an astounding set of achievements. They were Sub- urban Conference champions for the second year in a row, they finished second in the New Jersey sec- tional meet and first in the Monmouth Invitational Meet. Norman Reinhardt was the top runner on the 1970 squad. He was undefeated in dual meet com- petition and was the State Group II champ. During Norm's four years at Dayton, the harriers have lost just five dual meets. Other excellent runners com- prising one of the best teams in New Jersey were Gary Street, Ken Hall. Tod Herman, Bob Ripp, Marc Hollander, Greg Spector, Ron Frank and Karl Kotovsky.

WRESTLING

The Wrestling team experienced a very disappointing season mainly because of the small amount of boys who went out for the team. Despite the poor record many of the boys had successful seasons. Randy Huntoon came up with his finest season by first win- ning the Christmas Tournament, then went on to an 8-3 season record and ended up by taking a third in the districts. Dennis Marino also had a fine season with an 8-4-1 record while taking a third in the districts. Gary Branning also turned in a fine effort in the districts by taking a second; Gary had a respectable 6-6-1 record for the year. Alan Goodman and Kurt Meyer were the other senior wrestlers doing a good job against stiff opposition.

Coach "Big Ray" Yanchus

BASKETBALL

The Bulldogs didn't reach the finals in the Croup 2 state tournament competition, but the 1970-71 basketball season will definitely not be remembered as the "almost" year. Compiling a remarkable record of 22 wins, 3 losses, Springfield was once again Suburban Conference Champion, victor in the Dayton Christmas Invitational Tournament, and State Section 2, Group 2 Champs.

The six seniors on this years team put on many displays of brilliant basketball: Eddie Graessle with his remarkably quick and accurate jump shot. Bob "Frank Jano" Janukowicz with his "Bob Lob" and tenacious defense, Howie "Bells" Alex- ander with high calibre rebounding and scoring punch inside, Marc "Happy Holl" Hollander with his dribbling prowess and outside scoring, Greg Spector's bank shot, and Carmine "Bo" Bove's aggressive defense. Juniors Jim Schoch provided some much needed support off the bench.

Coach Yanchus led his team through two easy tournament games before the Section 2 finals against Kinnelon. All-State candidate Ed Graessle's shooting and passing highlighted Day- ton's 60-42 triumph. Regional fell in the semi-finals to Group 2 champion Cliffside Park, but this could not overshadow the amazing effort put forth by the entire Bulldog team in this year of "We're Number 1!"

BOWLING

Though a disappointing season the Dayton Bowling team never gave up nor did they lack enthusiasm. Robert Ripp came up with another fine season leading the team with a 176 average. Todd Herman finished the season with a 171 average despite an injury dur- ing the season. The team also had four other seniors, Doug Freeman, Arnie Coslit, Jay Silverman and Scott Boydman, all turning in fine effort.

INDOOR TRACK

Success and poor facilities highlighted the first year of indoor track as an accredited sport at Jonathan Dayton. The most outstanding achievement was Regional's victory in the State Group Two re- lays. In that meet. Norm Reinhardt, Bob Ripp, Joe Rapuano and Paul Fanaroff took first place in the sprint medley. This year's record in indoor track is undoubtedly an indication of success in the future.

BASEBALL

The Bulldogs will defend the Suburban Conference Cham- pionship with a strong hitting team, lead by returning letter- men Bob Janukowicz, Dave Miniman, and Pete May. Janu- kowicz and Miniman are experienced defenders at short-stop and third base, respectively, while May, together with Jeff Slater and Bob Quinn. will help form the outfield.

Rounding out this year's squad are juniors Gil Gleim, Rick Wnek, and Ed Cook in the infield, as well as senior Doug Freeman and Jim Schoch. who will do much of the pitching.

TENNIS

Under the direction of a new coach, Mr. Fernandez, the tennis team is looking forward to their best season. TRACK

Mr. T. expressed his usual optimism in this years track team. He is confident that the track team can repeat for the third time as Sec- tional Champs. With experienced men in all events the season should be a success. With distance running being our strongest event, Norm Reinhardt will lead the way in the mile. Other seniors who are running are Bob Ripp, Marc Hollander, Todd Herman, Ken Hall and Gary Street. The hurdles and sprints also should be a strong event with senior Carmine Bove and underclassmen Joe Rapuano and Paul Fanaroff. In the pole vault the team is resting their hopes on seniors Gary Branning, Paul Fries and Jerry Speisbach. In the weight department seniors Gary Grant, Dennis Marino and sophomore Scott Herman will round out an all around strong team.
